One of the problems of throwing a spinning punch is that it leaves you open to attack if you happen to miss it. This is exactly what happened to Chael Sonnen in during his second fight with Anderson Silva. He made the mistake of throwing a spinning punch that he probably should not have thrown in the match. What happened was that he fell onto his butt and Anderson Silva (being the champion that he is) capitalized on this opportunity. Anderson Silva ended the match as viciously as possible; scoring a TKO win over Chael Sonnen, which is a rare feat in of itself.
Chael Sonnen is not a fighter who is not stopped by punches very often. That is what made this victory all the more impressive because Anderson Silva did defeat him in an impressive fashion. Andersen scored a TKO win over Chael Sonnen. This was all made possible because Chael Sonnen made a tactical error in throwing a spinning punch that landed him straight onto his butt. The reason that he probably through this punch is that he was trying to mix up his attack so that Anderson Silva would be confused about his attacking style. However, it is not smart to fight someone in their primary style because they are used to seeing a lot of maneuvers in that particular style. Therefore, Anderson Silva was prepared for this spinning punch and he showed that skill by dodging the attack. Chael Sonnen proceeded to fall to the ground where he could be finished and that is exactly what Anderson Silva did.
The timing of the attack was also wrong. Ideally when someone wants to use a spinning technique, then they should set up the technique behind an established cross. To establish across one must hit the cross first. This means that Chael Sonnen would have had to hit Anderson Silva with his cross. This would have made Anderson Silva respect the punch as a viable weapon. If Chael Sonnen had done this correctly, he would have found that his spinning back this would have been more effective. However, because he had not already established his cross he had a harder time hitting Anderson Silva with his spinning back fist. Andersen dodged the attack causing Chael Sonnen to fall on his butt during the fight and the subsequent finish occurred.
The truth about the situation is that a spinning back fist is something that people throw but they do not understand how to use. It can be an effective weapon in the hands of someone who is experienced. This person should also understand the mechanics of where and why the maneuver would happen. In this case, this did not happen and the miss caused a devastating loss for Chael Sonnen. To my knowledge, Chael Sonnen had never been finished before this fight. However, he did experience a loss by TKO in this fight because he was not prepared to throw a spinning back fist the correct way at the correct time.
The take away from this fight is that a person should train their spinning techniques the proper way by setting them up before they ever throw the punch or kick. Anyone who does not set up their attacks is asking for trouble when they use a spinning attack. Therefore, it is imperative that a person get someone who is skilled in the use of spinning kicks to teach them how to use spinning kicks or punches at the right time for maximum effectiveness. If a person just throws these techniques willy-nilly, they will find that they will have a hard time connecting with the weapon and what they will find is that the technique leaves them open for many attacks.
