What Bruce Lee Could Teach the Contender Asia Contestants…

The Contender Asia 8/1/08

The major reason that Trevor lost this fight is that he violated Bruce Lee principle number one.

Single direct attack, this principle says that if you’re using a single direct attack to try to beat your opponent you will probably lose the fight.

In Jeet Kune Do (or JKD, Bruce Lee’s art) we don’t usually use a single direct attack.

This is because if you throw a certain maneuver over and over, you are easily timed for those maneuvers which will leave you open for several other maneuvers.

This happened to Trevor during the fight, he kept throwing a lead hook, which he other Thai boxer was able to time and throw counter jabs, crosses, and Muay Thai kicks into his face and his ribs.

Not to mention that Trevor seem to be following a wrestling style clinch work.

Then when they happened to grapple, the Thai boxer took maximum advantage of this as he threw multiple knees to Trevor’s body, causing a lot of damage, but not enough to end the fight.

But it was enough to get decision won.

Another mistake Trevor made was trying to use a double under a position.

This position normally would protect you from being taken down.

Which would have been smart, as Thai boxer had already shown at least twice earlier in the fight that he would take Trevor down for the points.

Trevor began to block this maneuver by taking double under hooks, which would be excellent position if he was in a wrestling match.

But this caused him to be very open for the Thai boxer’s knees.

Which, with his training, the Thai boxer used his knees to maximum effectiveness.

These two critical mistakes were what Trevor cost the match.

It was a good fight, but these technical mistakes cost him the match in the end.
