The Best things to take on an airplane that can save your life according to Sifu Ron Balicki as told by Hillsboro Martial Arts Expert

by Scott on October 29, 2008

aI had the good fortune of training with Sifu Ron Balicki over the weekend

(If you can call being thrown around and having 10 plus punches thrown at my groin good fortune, but that’s for another post…)

I ended up buying a sharpie from him that is also a pocket stick, which prompted a small conversation about Flight 93.

(Which is the flight that was supposed to crash into the Pentagon during 911.)

I told him that I wish one of those people had one of these and some training to use it.

He told me he agreed and he showed me what he travels with on planes and no one gives him trouble about it.

A rolled up newspaper
A sharpie (just like mine)
A flash light
And a Sarong (basically a very long scarf)

Which he then told me, “I know, I’m paranoid.”

In the hands of an experience Jeet Kune Do (JKD) instructor, any one of these weapons is formidable in a fight.

A newspaper can temporarily blind eyes.

A sharpie, can cause some very good bruises (or blind someone).

A flashlight can break bones.

A scarf (or sarong) can choke someone to unconsciousness.

The next time you go out on an airplane, you should consider at least one of these items.

And you should keep it close to you for use.

We teach every one of these weapons in my Hillsboro, OR martial arts school.

So if you feel like you need instruction

You won’t regret it.
