How good are you really?

by Scott on December 6, 2008

I was in doing some cardio/warm ups on the bag and I saw a guy who had trained pretty hard for a couple of years in the bag room

I worked with him a little bit

And I noticed something

He had holes in his style

He kept dropping his hands, and he didn’t have enough turn in his kicks to make them as powerful as they could be

His combinations also didn’t flow

Then I realized something

You could be technically proficient in techniques

But not as useable as mine

I figured out why

I’ve spent hours and hours in a gym just cultivating one combination or strike

So it’s ingrained in my body and I know my body knows how to do it

I don’t have to stop and worry if my toe is in the right place

I just know it is

I just make minor tweaks here and there now, and make things happens

This why Bruce Lee and his Jeet Kune Do were into economy of motion so much

It doesn’t matter what strike it is

You should be able to follow up naturally and honestly (without thinking is what this means)

No pause, no worrying about how you’re doing the technique

Your weapons should just fire

If you want to reach higher levels of striking capability

This I the way it must be

So stop worrying about your form, and make your minor tweaks as you go along

Don’t take it too serious

Have fun with it

Remember, if you want to get into my fitness/mma/martial arts everything but the kitchen sink classes, all you have to do in the month of December is donate some food!
