Hillsboro Martial Arts Teacher Explains Why Bruce Lee Made Jeet Kune Do (JKD)

by Scott on October 25, 2008

It’s no secret that Bruce’s original style was Wing Chun.

When he brought it over to the states, he originally modified it to Jun Fan and began to teach everyone.

This really made the Chinese community at the time upset, because foreigners should not be learning Chinese martial arts.

They challenged Bruce to a fight, and Bruce accepted.

If Bruce won, he would be allowed to teach who he wanted.

If he lost, he would have to stop teaching them.

So when fight time rolled around, Bruce did fight and beat him.

In 3 minutes, he had the other fighter pinned to the ground and made him give up.

In actuality, that probably was the first MMA fight, but anyway.

Linda asked him why he was so down after the victory.

Bruce said this, “it took too long.”

That was the genesis of Jeet Kune Do; he wanted to make a system that would allow him to take care someone quickly.

Over the years, it’s taken on different arts (in conceptual JKD at least) and mutated from what Bruce taught, like he wanted us to do.

And that’s exactly what I teach at my martial arts school in Hillsboro, it’s an evolved Jeet Kune Do.

Bruce Lee told us to evolve, and that’s exactly what we did.
